MEDAL OF HONOR. The highest military award given by our country was first authorized in 1861 and is given for acts of bravery above and beyond the call of duty.

PURPLE HEART. This was the first medal awarded by our country. It was first awarded in 1782 and was given for acts of bravery. Later, it was given for wounds only.

Other medals awarded for acts of bravery in combat are:

  • Navy Cross

  • Silver Star

  • Distinguished Flying Cross

  • Navy and Marine Corps Medal (peacetime or combat not involving actual conflict with the enemy)

  • Bronze Start

  • Air Medal

  • Navy Commendation Medal

Ribbons were authorized in 1905 for wear on certain uniforms in lieu of medals. In addition to decorations, they represent service medals awarded for service performed in certain geographic areas during specified time periods. Stars and other devices worn on service medals and ribbons represent battles or campaigns in which the individual Marine participated. Stars, Leaves or numerals on personal or unit decorations denote additional awards of the appropriate decoration to the individual Marine.
Marksmanship badges are awarded for degrees of proficiency with small arms.
